Regarded as the eighth wonder
Harrisons Cave Barbados is the
most popular attraction in Barbados, you only have visit
to see why. So if you have time to see only one attraction
while on vacation on the island make sure it is the cave.
Through out this site we have referred to the natural
beauty of the island. Its near perfect weather, its
spectacular white sand beaches, its tantalizing turquoise
waters, its magnificent coral gardens and of course the
warmth and friendliness of the people.
In this section of the site we take a look at Harrisons
Cave appropriately describe as the eighth wonder of the
world. The cave is a unique natural phenomenon that dates
back to the 18th century. It was re-discovered in the
1970’s by Ole Sorensen a Danish cave explorer.
Since then thousands of people have past through the cave
each year... It is our favourite Barbados attraction we’ve
visited time and time again to reflect and to rejuvenate
ourselves. So this particular visit of the cave it was no
It was a long weekend and we had
a rental from one of the island’s popular car rental
companies... not just any rental we had gotten ourselves a
Our Fascination With Harrisons Cave Barbados
As we set off in the rental the kids were really excited.
We had visited numerous Barbados attractions but the one
they were most fascinated by was Harrisons Cave. As we
drove through the lush rolling hills of central Barbados
listening to the kids made me realize that the excitement
was contagious. I was beginning to feel very excited as
well... Just remembering the spectacular natural beauty
that lie beneath was overwhelming.
Eight wonder of the world I thought to myself... and as I
reflected on this I thought they sure got this description
right. You’ll have to visit this attraction to fully
understand the awesome features of this underground
Measuring approximately three miles long this geological
wonder presents an incredible sight. Icicle shape
stalactites hang from the roof of the cave while rising
from the floor are some impressive stalagmites... But the
stalactites and stalagmites are not the most impressive
features of this magnificent cave. As I reflect on the
last visit the most impressive sight was the Great Hall.
In this serene section often referred to as the cathedral
the stalagmite formations stand in clusters and the
calcite formation take on different shapes. There is also
a section known as the village where the stalagmite
formations resemble a group of people standing around. A
number of other outstanding features exist within
What You Will See At Harrisons Cave Barbados
There are double cascading waterfalls that plunge to the
floor and disappear under the passageway.
You will see what is believed to be the original streams
that form the cave many centuries ago... You will also see
the Mirror Lake formed by a large pool whose surface
reflects the intricate and complex details of the Great
So as we park the vehicle I wondered what for me was the
most fascinating feature of the cave... was it the amazing
geological formations? Was it the glimmering light that
some how seem to bounce off the pure white formation or
was it simply the complex nature of this underground
I could not put my finger on what it was... but as the
tour began and the tram cruise along the illuminated
hallways it suddenly came to me... It was the tranquility.
The peace and serenity on the ride was amazing. In fact it
was so quiet it seem sacred.
And as the kids gazed in wonder at the magnificent cavern
the look on their faces was another reminder why this
attraction is a must see.
