I miss Barbados. I am a Bajan, living in the US since age 17 almost 40 years...

CHRISTMAS is not the same, although I cook the same food, drink Mauby, Sorrel and Ginger beer.

Here the smell it’s not the same. And Bico Ice Cream rum and raisins, vanilla cherry was to die for.

The food here is the same; we do not lack any thing... What we lack is the smell of the mangoes, bananas and apples.

That gives me a taste/smell of paradise

Bajan Christmas is the Best
by: Hamilton

Maybe it has to do with the Christmas spirit, we follow a number of traditions, like sprucing up the home whether it is painting the house or washing it down, putting up new curtains and even buying new furniture.

All these changes add to the smell at this time of the year...

so although some of the same foods and traditions may occur away from our shores, no one celebrates Christmas like we do.

You mention the fruit but the other traditional sights around Christmas like the poinsettia and the snow on the mountain in bloom certainly make our Bajan Christmas the best.
