Road Tennis – Is the national sport of Barbados. This game which originated here on the island back in the 1950’s is a cross between lawn tennis and table tennis.

The game is called road tennis because originally it was played on courts painted on the streets in the various villages around the island. And even though this still happens to some extent the game has been move to the car parks and hard courts as the streets have gotten more congested with vehicles.

They are a number of tournaments held each year some of them under the auspices of the Barbados Road Tennis Association which is the governing body for the sport on the island.

This national pastime is traditionally held around the island during the Easter holidays – round kites, square kites, Star Diamonds, Propellers and Trousers are all designs that are prevalent at this time of the year.

It is not unusual to hear the humming sounds of a kite’s bull through-out the day as it dances in the sky to the cooling breezes that blow across the island.
