Brown Sugar Restaurant... The Home of Authentic Barbados Flavour

Brown Sugar restaurant the place you'll want to be... Whether you want a taste of Barbados fame Flying Fish & Cou Cou or Pudding & Souse. This Barbados restaurant has long been regarded as the home of authentic Barbadian flavours...

We had never eaten there before mainly because getting an authentic Bajan meal was never a problem. All we had to do was say mum we are stopping by later.

And out of thin air our mothers would whip together some of the most delicious food you could imagine... Rice & peas with stuff bake chicken, macaroni pie, sweet potatoes pie, cou cou & flying fish, coconut sweet bread... to name a few.

...But this occasion was different we wanted to treat our mothers to a wonderful Mothers Day lunch. But knowing older Barbadian women, it is hell to get them away from their kitchens.

So we needed a Barbadian restaurant that would meet the high standards they set for the preparation of local cuisine. The Brown Sugar restaurant came highly recommended as the place to sample the authentic flavours of Barbados food... but we still had to take a look at the menu to see what was on offer.

Now my wife and I had past the Brown Sugar’s Aquatic Gap location on numerous occasions but had never gone in... but on this occasion we wanted to make sure that the restaurant would meet the taste of our mothers. What we saw reassured us that this was the right choice.

The restaurant is house in a beautiful traditional Barbadian style home set amidst lush fern fill patios and cascading water gardens. And from the time you enter there is a warm welcoming feel.

But what really convinced us was the menu… and in particular the sumptuous all-you-can-eat four-course Sunday Bajan Lunch Buffet. This feast features a list of more than 25 Barbadian and Caribbean delicacies like...

  • Split Pea & Pumpkin Soup
  • Field Peas & Rice
  • Macaroni Pie
  • Sweet Potato Pie
  • Pumpkin Fritters
  • Baked Chicken
  • Fried/Steamed Flying Fish
  • Pickled Green Banana
  • Pickled Pork (Souse)
  • Bajan Bread Pudding
  • Coconut Bread
  • Cassava Pone

... all delicious and mouth-watering staples of any Bajan menu.

So quite happy with what we had seen, we place our reservations… and turn our attention to the difficult task of convincing our mums that there were other people who could cook a real Barbadian Sunday lunch.

We made our calls and what a surprise... convincing our mothers to leave their kitchens and go to lunch wasn’t that difficult. They both had heard raving reviews of the authentic Barbadian flavour at Brown Sugar and wanted to sample the fare.

Then finally, the day was upon us... and as we got dress and pick up our guest of honour I wondered if this Barbados restaurant would live up to all of our expectations. We arrived at the restaurant in time for our 12:30 reservations.

As soon as we were seated in their charming dining room, the mesmerizing sounds of steel pan music and the mouth watering flavours of Barbadian cuisine filled the air... the ambiance was so reassuring mom said “It felt more like lunch at family than at a restaurant.”

We got into the buffet line with high expectations… well the food look so delicious I got a little carried away so much so that the food on my plate look more like a mountain.

My wife and I both had the Field Peas & Rice, Macaroni Pie, Sweet Potato Pie, Pumpkin Fritters and Baked Chicken. Our mothers choose the Field Peas & Rice, Baked Cinnamon Plantain with Fried Flying Fish and tomato salad.

And for desert all of us decided to try the Golden Apple Pie… what a delightful Sunday afternoon, and to top it all off our mothers past the Brown Sugar with flying colours.

Service was friendly, prompt and most important the flavour was Barbadian. So if you are looking for a Barbados restaurant serving sumptuous bajan fare we recommend the Brown Sugar restaurant...
