Barbados Marathon

The Run Barbados series is organized by the Barbados Tourism Authority, a governmental organization formed in 1950 to promote and help with the development of the island’s tourism product. They establish the Run Barbados series in 1983 to assist with the promotion of the island’s sports tourism program as well as to promote a healthy lifestyle among all age groups through sports.

Originally the series started with only the Bridgetown 10 K and the marathon... with both events taking part along some of the island’s more scenic routes. The 26 mile Barbados marathon started at the Grantley Adams International Airport and travel through the old fishing town of Oistins, along the playful south coast to the historic city of Bridgetown.

Participants then travel along the gorgeous west coast road through historic Holetown, to finish at Speightstown in the north, right on the edge of one of the most picture perfect beaches you can imagine. The 10 K race started at the beautiful Bay street esplanade and travel along the historic careenage in Bridgetown returning to the Bay Street Esplanade finish along the cities main shopping area..

Over the years a number of other events like the Gap fun mile and the half marathon has been added to the series which has increased its popularity as well as broaden participation. But through it all one thing that has remain constant is the level of satisfaction by the athletes... If you were to ask any of the world-class runners who have taken part in the Barbados marathon...

Or any of the other events in the Run Barbados series what they think about this run in the sun... They no doubt would tell you that it’s like running in paradise. Sure they may complain about the tough conditions... like the hot weather and the high humidity. But they will also say that the flat undulating terrain, the beautiful scenery and the thousands of friendly spectators who watch and urging them on helps them along the marathon course... and made the experience an even more memorable one.
