17th Century Barbados Great House

by Fay
(Bridgetown Barbados)

During the period January to April the Barbados National Trust open some amazing historic houses to the public…

Captured here in this photo is Fisher Pond Great house an amazing 300 year old rubble stone plantation house built in the mid 1600’s in the Caribbean Georgian style.

This historic house is set in central Barbados amidst sugar cane fields, majestic Royal Palms and clusters of bamboo which really enhances the charm of the by-gone era.

You wouldn’t believe it but this house isn’t just an old museum it is still the home of a wonderful family... who open their home to you for special occasions none more special than their Sunday buffet lunch.

The open house gave us the opportunity to have a wonderful guided tour of this ancient mansion where we got to see the work that has gone in to restore this architectural gem.

Inside the old world charm is amazing... the house feature two foot walls and a number of decorations from the far East... but what stood out were the dining room which feature an early 18th century dining table, which could be extended to seat 24.

There is also a magnificent 18th century crystal chandelier which hangs over the table this chandelier was restored by the current owners it really adds to the ambiance of the house.

Another unique aspect of this old house is the small, barrel vaulted hallway which was built after the 1781 hurricane as shelter from future storms.

The only regret was that no photographs were allowed inside the old mansion but as seen in the photo we were able to capture the magnificent exterior.
